Why we think Messy Hair & Pyjamas Are Strengths in online sessions

There is an unwritten rule in traditional therapy settings that requires a certain level of performance. You have to get showered, dressed appropriately in clean clothes, navigate traffic, sit in an unfamiliar brightly lit and often noisy rooms, and try to articulate your deepest internal struggles to a stranger while your nervous system buzzes with every sensory input around you.
For neurodivergent women, that pre-session preparation is an immense drain on capacity. By the time you actually sit across from a practitioner, half your energy has already been spent masking, adjusting, and trying to look "normal", whatever that is....and forcing yourself to sit still. Ugh.
Worse still is the constant internal monitoring. You sit there hoping you don't accidentally disclose too much, because misunderstandings are rife in those clinical settings. You know that specific, stomach-dropping moment all too well: the look of subtle horror on the counsellors face when they react to what you thought was a hilariously delivered, deeply relatable joke about your own coping mechanisms.
Suddenly, even your humour feels scrutinised as a symptom, and you're left feeling completely misread.
Again.
We think online support is a much better way. You get to be in your own space, showing up with messy hair, wrapped in a weighted blanket, and sharing dark, neurospicy humour isn’t a sign of unravelling, it is an absolute strength.
The Power of Dropping the Performance
When you don’t have to perform "being okay," dress up for a clinical environment, or censor your communication style, something fundamental shifts in your body:
Your Nervous System Drops Its Guard: Sensory comfort directly regulates fight-or-flight. Soft fabrics, familiar lighting, and zero physical pressure mean your brain doesn't have to allocate energy to managing discomfort. So you can relax and share what's bothering you.
Humour Needs No Explanation: You don't have to deadpan explain your jokes or cushion your lived reality. Irony, dark humour, and self-deprecating wit are recognised for what they often are, brilliant, creative ways neurodivergent minds process stress and build resilience.
Energy is Conserved for What Matters: Every spoon you save on getting ready, travelling, or carefully choosing your words to avoid the humiliation of being misunderstood, is a spoon you get to keep for real therapeutic integration and support.
Will We Go on Tangents? Absolutely.
If you’ve ever tried to explain a thought in a traditional clinical space, you’ve likely seen the practitioner glance at the clock, interrupt your train of thought, or try to force you back to "the main point."
In a neurotypical context, a tangent is viewed as a distraction or a lack of focus. In our space, we know the truth: Spicy minds think in rich, interconnected webs.
What looks like a random detour to an outside observer is actually your brain retrieving vital context, connecting a core memory, or finding the precise analogy needed to explain how a feeling lands in your body. When you say, "This reminds me of that time five years ago when..." you aren't getting off track. You are pulling the thread that leads straight to the heart of the narrative.
Will we go on tangents? Yes, probably. But we know it will circle back, and it always has a point. You never have to apologise with a nervous "sorry for rambling" here, we hold the space, and let your thoughts move at their natural, expressive pace.
Lived Experience: Why we prefer to just be ourselves in this space
Traditional therapeutic models are built on an unequal and strict hierarchy: the clinician sits on one side as the untouchable, objective 'expert' with a notebook, and you are measured against the same neurotypical norms that you are struggling with, and most likely why you are there. We burnt out even working in those systems!
Lived experience completely dismantles this outdated practice.
As an AuADHD practitioner, I know what sensory overload feels like in my own body. I know the visceral exhaustion of pre-diagnosis burnout, the weight of rejection sensitivity, and the frustration of being misunderstood by mainstream systems that simply don't get it.
Because we’ve lived it, you never have to waste your precious energy translating your communication style or worrying that you are "too much."
Co-Designing your support
At the end of the day, we are peers. You are the ultimate expert on your own internal landscape. Our role is simply to bring appropriate evidence-based therapeutic practices into a shared space where you feel entirely safe to use them.
If that safe space means logging into Telehealth with unbrushed hair, soft pyjamas, a warm cup of tea, telling stories, and a dry sense of humor, that isn’t unprofessional. It is a deliberate choice to prioritise your authentic comfort over clinical expectations.
And being fully, authentically yourself without fear of judgment? That is where real healing begins and we love to see it.
